Technical and technological constraints facing Tanzania leather value chain: a snapshot of intervention measures

Abstract The leather value chain starts with livestock, the key source of hides and skins, main raw materials for industry. Despite having second-largest livestock population in Africa, Tanzania is only 11th largest exporter on continent, underlining disproportionate contribution sector to economy. This study presents results a recent assessment aimed at identifying performance bottlenecks Tanzania's sector. took place October–December 2020 involved 10 tanneries, 30 goods factories 11 service providers/institutions. Findings reveal that 90% tanneries are dissatisfied quality skins due brand marks, flay cuts, skin diseases, inadequate curing. These supply further compounded by skill deficiencies among processors, poor waste management, limited awareness about laws, policies regulations governing trade At downstream end chain, related articles facing competition from high importation low-grade products like plastic shoes second-hand products. paper recommends efforts increase leather's economic need focus upgrading Tanzania’s production, processing, branding marketing capacities.
